Wicklow Sustainable Living Network

  • Wicklow Transition Initiative - was the first local response to the pressures of climate change and peak oil, as part of a global movement https://transitionnetwork.org encouraging an approach of thinking globally and acting locally where communities are encouraged to work together to create new visions for their area and steps towards reaching those visions.

A new learning network formed in 2015 where representatives from the following organisations came together over a year long period to learn, support and develop our leadership in sustainable living:

  • Carraig Dulra (lead/co-ordinating organisation)
  • Common Ground - an arts organisation based in the Canal Communities and founded to explore the potential role of arts and culture in urban community regeneration; the organisation's mission is to provide people with the opportunity to experience everything that the arts can offer
  • Slow Food Sugarloaf Convivium - a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment
  • Ooooby (Out of our own back yard) - a project focused on developing a local affordable, healthy food resource through the sale of local produce grown at Carraig Dulra, as well as bulk purchase of foods not available locally; the group also provides local food awareness events and education initiatives.
  • Grow it Yourself (GIY) Bray - a community to inspire and support growing food (groups exist all over the world)
  • Greystones Family Resource Centre - a program to support families and local communities. The program tackles local problems and improve the functioning of family units through a network of partnerships, and through encouragement of development through principles of social justice & inclusion
  • Brockagh Resource Centre - a modern, multi-purpose resource centre conveniently located at the heart of County Wicklow, aiming to cater for the social, cultural, and educational aspirations of the community.
  • Greystones/Kilcoole Community Gardening Group - a green space where people can learn about and start growing their own fruit and vegetables; the garden works with local schools and to encourage visits for children
